Introduction

Joey’s Jungle,

A Responsive Website, Rare-Plant Boutique.

When approached in March of 2022 with the idea of creating an elevated online Rare-Plant boutique, I knew that I would need to create a strong identifiable brand, with eye-catching photography and dynamic colorography.

The Roles and Responsibilities

I wrote this brief as a solo project, and I was given 4 weeks by the client to create a stunning well-designed website to gain the confidence and trust of rare plant collectors from around the world. At the end of the four weeks, I would need to produce all the needed user research, wireframing, usability testing, prototyping, branding, and of course the responsive web designs needed to make this luxury site successful.

The Problem and Solution

With the recent influx of rare houseplant collectors, this peaceful plant community has grown wild. It is apparent the new growth and attention have launched a somewhat, slow or previously failing industry, into a global trend leader. Unfortunately, this high level of disruption can also gather the attention of the unscrupulous or self-serving, which have recently flooded the industry and previously trusted retailers like Easy and eBay, with diseased, knock-off, or look-alike plants.
Fortunately, this hobby previously only supported by a small group of aging individuals has recently caught the attention of the coming of age discerning collector. This new generation’s appreciation for quality over quality and the environment, coupled with the innate human desire to acquire the eye-catching and rare, has created a new caliber of a rare plant collector. This new generation of padded-pocket-book collectors knows exactly what rare plant they are searching for, what a truly special and healthy plant should look like, and importantly what it should cost.

The only solution now is to create an industry-leading, strong, reliable, and trustworthy boutique website with appropriate branding, to cater to the new discerning Aroid plant collectors from around the world.

The Competitor Analysis

The results were mixed from the competitive analysis, while there are a handful of options for people looking for a plant care app,  the current options available are either lacking in features or extremely costly.

The Surveys

Research Survey : Summary of findings

We found this research survey to be extremely helpful in understanding people’s perception of luxury as well as how they source their rare collectibles. Even though the scope of the survey is not entirely centered around rare Aroid plants, the correlation of a collectors' mentality, insight and purchase patterns are perceived in the same way.
Therefore, each of the fourteen participants provided answers and or recommendations, that justify the creation of Joey’s Jungle online boutique.

Key Findings

  • 50% of participants solely acquire their collectible and or treasure from independent online boutiques or retailers. With 20% purchasing from online market places, like Etsy and eBay.

  • When asked about a websites quality of the aesthetics’s, over 70% of participants found a websites attention to detail and quality of aesthetics, to be the most important feature in providing peace of mind when making a purchase!

  • 80% of participants found a well laid out and easy to use website to be the most important factor in their brand loyalty.

  • 70% of participants based their confidence in luxury purchases by reputation and quality alone.

The Branding

The branding process started organically with very rough hand sketches. Which led to a more immersive approach in high fidelity renderings in Figma.

The Finishing touches

On final completion of the high fidelity mock up and prototype, I conducted the usability testing with the six participants that volunteered. The data and input collected from usability testing was very insightful and led to appropriate iterations needed to refine Joey’s Jungle to the high standard we sought out to create.
The following are a few of the minor iterations,

What’s next?

Now that phase one has successfully been completed, I would like to continue working with the client on the proposed expanded features in phases two and three. Followed by the appropriate user testing and necessary iterations.

What I gained from this project!

With my former background in Luxury Jewelry sales, I really enjoyed creating an elevated site for a product that is not commonly associated with the perception of luxury.
